This second module provides a comprehensive look at the types and use of various contours and angles in the seat support, back support, lower extremity and upper extremity supports, as well as how to use these to address the postural needs of the pelvis, lower extremities, trunk and head. You should complete the four modules in order as they provide a continuum of knowledge. This is the second in a series of four modules, the first three of which are video modules, that provides a comprehensive review of the types, options, features, and appropriate use of potential seating solutions, as well as how to match them to specific seating needs. The modules were developed from a series of presentations by Elizabeth Cole at VGM Group, Inc. 2012 Heartland Conference. This second module provides a comprehensive look at the types and use of various contours and angles in the seat support, back support, lower extremity and upper extremity supports, as well as how to use these to address the postural needs of the pelvis, lower extremities, trunk and head. You should complete the four modules in order as they provide a continuum of knowledge. Learning objectives:

  1. List the seating and positioning goals for the seat support and the back support;
  2. Describe the features, benefits and appropriate use of a posterior contour in the seat support;
  3. Identify the appropriate use and size of an anti-thrust seat and the consequences of improper fit;
  4. Describe the benefits, appropriate use, contraindications and considerations of an open seat-to-back angle;
  5. Describe the benefits, appropriate use, contraindications and considerations of a split seat and a unilateral leg trough;
  6. Describe the benefits, appropriate use, contraindications and considerations of a closed seat-to-back angle and a wedge seat;
  7. Identify the correct and incorrect use of elevating and articulating leg rests;
  8. Describe the proper position of the foot on the footplate, the consequences of improper placement and the appropriate use for angle adjustable footplates;
  9. Describe the features, benefits and appropriate use of a posterior and a posterior lateral contour in the back support;
  10. Describe the features, benefits and appropriate use of a back angle;
  11. Identify the role of the armrests in posture;
  12. Describe the features, benefits, and appropriate use of a posterior pad, occipital support, occipital pads, lateral facial pads, and anterior supports for a headrest.
To successfully complete this module, you must attain a minimum score of 80% on the final exam and complete the module training survey.
