You have chosen the most appropriate power wheelchair base, have selected the most optimal drive wheel position, have determined which type of seating and/or power seat functions will best meet the needs of your individual client, and have identified what components and features are needed in the electronics package. Now, how will this individual operate the power wheelchair? What kind of drive control (drive input device) is appropriate? This course will provide a comprehensive review of the different types of available drive controls, including their features and clinical application.

Learning objectives:

1. Identify the requirements for an appropriate access site for operation of a power wheelchair drive control;
2. Discuss the differences between an integral and a remote joystick;
3. Discuss the differences between a basic and an expanded joystick;
4. Identify at least four proportional control alternatives to a standard joystick for the individual who has some upper extremity function, and discuss their features and user requirements;
5. Identify at least two non-proportional control alternatives to a standard joystick for the individual who has some upper extremity function, and discuss their features and user requirements;
6. Identify at least four proportional drive control devices that are operated by body parts other than the upper extremity, and discuss their features and user requirements;
7. Identify at least four non-proportional drive control devices that are operated by body parts other than the upper extremity, and discuss their features and user requirements.

To successfully complete this course, you must attain a minimum score of 80% on the final exam and complete the course training survey.
