MOB004 - Choosing the Appropriate Electronics for a Power Wheelchair

You have chosen the most appropriate power wheelchair base, have selected the most optimal drive wheel position, and have determined which type of seating and/or power seat functions will best meet the needs of your individual client. Now, how will this individual operate the power wheelchair? What type of electronics do you need? This course will present a discussion of the various components of wheelchair electronics.

Learning objectives:

1. Explain the differences between a proportional and non-proportional drive control device, including features, considerations and user requirements;
2. Explain the differences between latch mode and momentary mode, including features, considerations and user requirements;
3. Define the concept of through-drive control of power seating, and identify when it might be required;
4. Identify five different types of switches, and discuss their features and potential uses;
5. Identify at least five typical programming parameters for power wheelchair electronics, and describe when and how you would use them;
6. Define a drive profile and identify the benefits of multiple drive profiles.

To successfully complete this course, you must attain a minimum score of 80% on the final exam and complete the course training survey.
