This course will present an overview of the characteristics and effects of normal muscle tone, abnormal muscle tone, primitive reflexes and postural reactions. We will also identify considerations that should be taken into account when providing assistive technology for individuals with compromises in muscle tone and reflexes.

This course will present an overview of the characteristics and effects of normal muscle tone, abnormal muscle tone, primitive reflexes and postural reactions. We will also identify considerations that should be taken into account when providing assistive technology for individuals with compromises in muscle tone and reflexes.

Learning objectives:

  1. Define and describe the characteristics and role of normal muscle tone;
  2. Define and describe the characteristics of hypertonia, hypotonia, spasticity, dystonia, ataxia, clonus, rigidity and athetosis;
  3. List the potential effects of increased muscle tone and decreased muscle tone;
  4. Define primitive reflexes and postural reactions;
  5. Describe the basic characteristics of the following primitive reflexes and potential considerations when providing assistive technology: asymmetrical tonic neck (ATNR), Moro, spinal gallant, tonic labyrinthine, palmar, plantar, positive supporting, stepping and symmetrical tonic neck (STNR);
  6. Describe the basic characteristics of the following postural reactions and the affects of non-emergence: head righting (oculo and labyrinthine), neck on body (NOB), body on body (BOB), parachute, tilting and equilibrium, and protective extension.
To successfully complete this course, you must attain a minimum score of 80% on the final exam and complete the course training survey.
