Disease processes, medical conditions and traumas can be categorized as either progressive or non-progressive.A progressive condition is one in which there is some kind of degenerative or on-going process which causes continued, and most often, worsening of symptoms.The individual with a progressive condition will most likely, over time, experience a decline in function, medical health, physical capabilities and/or cognitive capacity. This course will present an overview of progressive neurological disorders including Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Post-polio Syndrome and Parkinson's Disease.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the pathology that causes Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Post-polio Syndrome (PPS), and Parkinson's Disease (PD);
- Describe the symptoms, typical progression and prognosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), SMA, ALS, and PD;
- Describe the symptoms of PPS;
- Discuss the factors that should be considered in the provision of seating and mobility devices for a person with DMD, SMA, ALS, PPS or PD;
- Describe the range of potential effects of MS on muscle strength and motor control;
- List at least five other potential effects of MS;
- Discuss the range of seating and mobility devices that might be used by a person with MS and factors that should be considered in their provision.
