Disease processes, medical conditions and traumas can be categorized as either progressive or non-progressive. Non-progressive conditions are ones in which the disorder itself does not cause further or ongoing changes in medical, physical or cognitive health. This course presents an overview of non-progressive conditions that affect the spinal cord, including traumatic spinal cord injury and Spina Bifida.

Learning objectives:

  1. Describe the basic anatomy of the spinal cord;
  2. Describe the ways in which the spinal cord could be injured and the pathology that occurs;
  3. Explain the difference between the orthopedic level of spinal cord injury and the neurological level of spinal cord injury;
  4. List the potential sequelae and complications of a spinal cord injury;
  5. Describe a basic picture of an individual at each neurological level of spinal cord injury with regards to functional abilities, limitations and need for assistive technology;
  6. Identify the major factors that should be considered when choosing seating and wheeled mobility devices for each of the individuals in objective #5;
  7. Describe the three types of spina bifida;
  8. List the potential sequelae and complications of spina bifida;
  9. Identify the major factors that should be considered when choosing seating and wheeled mobility devices for the individual with spina bifida.
To successfully complete this course, you must attain a minimum score of 80% on the final exam and complete the course training survey.
